As a parent, you have to teach fire safety to your kids. In addition to keeping them away from flammable materials, you have to arm them with information to ensure their safety against fires. Keeping them safe against fires will also keep your family and home safe.

This article will provide the very basic fire safety tips. Unfortunately, a lot of parents don’t teach them to their kids. Don’t make the same mistake.

Make them Understand that Playing with Fire is Dangerous

Tell them, no, make them understand that playing with fire is dangerous. Let them know what may happen if they play with fire. Let them know that handling fires is an adult responsibility.

Observe your kids. If they’re showing interest towards matches, lighters, ovens, stoves and the likes, immediately make them understand not to play with those things. Stop a potential issue.

Keep them Away from Matches and Lighters

If they don’t have access to them, then they won’t be able to use them to start a fire. This is why it’s very important to keep very young kids away from fire starters. Eventually when they’re old enough, they should learn how and when to use them. Only you will be able to tell if they’re responsible enough for this responsibility. When that time comes, it’s your responsibility to teach them how to handle matches, lighters and other fire starters.

Be a Good Role Model

You can’t teach fire safety to your kids if you don’t practice it. Practice what you preach. Show your kids that you take fire safety seriously and that you practice it. This will make it easier for you to teach them because you’re practicing what you’re preaching.

Have a Fire Escape Plan and Educate Your Kids about it

Companies and some cities hold fire drills. You should also do the same. Have a fire escape plan and include everyone in your family. Educate your kids on what they should do in case of a fire, which is of course to get out.

Show them how to get out via the fire escape plan. Have at least two possible exits.

Have a Fire Extinguisher and Show Your Kids How to Use it

It should be in an accessible area. Everyone in your family should know where to get it and how to use it in case of a fire. Most fire extinguishers are very easy to use.

Teach them How to Stop, Drop and Roll

This is very important if their clothing catches on fire. Misinformed kids will run. Teach them the very basic stop, drop and roll technique. Have them practice until they’ve mastered it.

Start Right Now!

Education on fire safety should start as early as possible. This means that you should start right now. You can get started with the tips listed above, together with the other fire safety tips listed on this infographic by ContractorQuotes.us.
